Burger King’s twitter account was reportedly hacked, telling followers that the chain was bought out by McDonald’s because “the whopper flopped.” The “i’m lov’in it” fast food hacker changed the @BurgerKing account name to “McDonalds” and changed the banner picture to the Golden Arches.
After shutting down the site Burger King released a statement saying,
“We have worked directly with administrators to suspend the account until we are able to re-establish our legitimate site and authentic postings,” the company said in a statement. “We apologize to our fans and followers who have been receiving erroneous tweets about other members of our industry and additional inappropriate topics.”
Before the twitter feed was defaced, hackers posted racial tweets to Burger King’s some 83,000 followers, a tally that quickly grew by about 25,000 to over 108,000.
Anonymous appears to take responsibility, although, no one really understands the motive of the hack.
