Cyberattacks On The Rise – Affecting Businesses Globally

Apr 29, 2015

According to Symantec’s annual Internet Security Threat study, cyberattacks and cybercrime has risen by 40%.Attacks on small to medium sized businesses increased by 26% and 30% as well.

Five out of every six large companies (2500+ employees) were targeted with various types of attacks including phishing attacks or email fraud.

Symantec’s report analyzed emerging trends in attacks, malicious code, phishing and spam. Their discovery was that nearly 1 million malware threats including hostile software such as viruses, spyware, trojan horses and malicious programs are being released everyday.

  • Ransomware attacks are those which restrict access to the computers they infect, have increased by over 110%.
  • Crypto-ransomware attacks have seen a massive increase of over 4000%. Files are encrypted, and victims are offered a key to decrypt their files after paying a ransom – with no guarantee they will be able to retrieve their files.

Cyberattacks are becoming more prevalent, innovative and harder to prevent. Attackers are moving forward faster, while companies stay behind. These cybercrimals are bypassing companies defenses, with a heightened level of sophistication. The complexity of the attacks are also increasing as attackers are adapting faster to vulnerabilities than they used to.

Advanced attackers distributed legitimate software which allows their attacks to continue without risking discovery by anti-malware tools. Crimeware tools were also used to build custom attack software inside a victims network and servers.

2014 was a year of faster attacks, holding files for ransom and increasingly malicious code than previous years have seen.
